On Sept. 18, 2019, Dassault Systèmes launched the latest edition of its 3D design and engineering application: SOLIDWORKS 2020.
The one-stop shop for design
Perhaps the biggest new feature for SOLIDWORKS 2020 is the product's seamless connectivity with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. The 3DEXPERIENCE platform is a seperate Dassault Systèmes tool that offers 3D design, analysis, simulation and intelligence software in a collaborative interactive environment. By making the interaction between the two products more seamless, Dassault Systèmes is attempting to create a one-stop shop for every aspect of developing and bringing a product to market.
What are the other key features?
- Make part flexible: Another new feature that was introduced for SOLIDWORKS 2020 is within a tool called make part flexible. The tool allows users to create flexible motion within the structure of any part. By giving these designs a flexible motion, users can accurately evaluate how the tool will perform in real life.
The design reacts with a flexible motion to demonstrate its real-life functionality.

- New detailing mode: SOLIDWORKS' detailing mode allows users to open drawings in a matter of seconds, regardless of their file size. This tool is a way for users to quickly edit and annotate drawings, as well as make product measurements.
G2 believes the CAD market is demanding more flexibility and collaboration
Earlier this year Autodesk announced a new edition of the design tool AutoCAD, AutoCAD 2020. The announcement came with some news that the company would be partnering with Microsoft and Box to create a more efficient workflow and improve collaboration for its users. The partnership allowed users to open any DWG file stored in Microsoft OneDrive and Box with the AutoCAD web app, at the push of a button.
G2 has analyzed the computer-aided design market and noticed growing demands for more connectivity, collaboration, and speed from CAD solutions. SOLIDWORKS 2020 is Dassault Systèmes’ answer to AutoCAD 2020 and these growing demands within the market.
Going forward, G2 expects these two tech giants of CAD software to introduce new products that focus on seamless integration and collaboration in manufacturing and design.
