What piqued my interest in this week's list? Passwordless authentication
These days, securing user accounts with passwords alone won’t cut it, so I was pleased to see the increased interest in passwordless authentication solutions. I am an enthusiastic supporter of securing user accounts with multi-factor authentication (MFA).
Passwordless authentication can help secure users with poor password practices by eliminating the need for passwords entirely. For example, users who suffer from password fatigue because they refuse to properly employ a password manager to store and safeguard their unique and strong passwords, often reuse the same password for multiple accounts. This is bad for security.
Passwordless authentication can help these users by eliminating the need for a password as an authentication factor (something a user knows) and replacing it instead with something they have (like a trusted mobile device or physical security key) or something they are (such as a biometric like a fingerprint or face print).
The sudden interest in passwordless authentication solutions on G2 may be related to a well-known passwordless authentication vendor Yubico, announcing the launch of their new YubiKey Bio Series, their first-ever biometric authentication solution. Or maybe not. Who knows! But while you’re here, here is a list of 60 passwordless authentication solutions in G2’s Passwordless Authentication Category.
